Photos: HIROYASU TSURI ‘Outsiders’ at Backwoods Gallery – Melbourne

Hiroyasu Tsuri, aka TWOONE recently opened his solo show ‘Outsiders’ at Backwoods Gallery in Melbourne. An epic body of work which focussed on his technique of backlit reverse paintings and hand made sculptures. As always, a beautiful but simple body of work from the artist, who is now based in Berlin.

A Study Of Hair at Backwoods Gallery

This September, Backwoods Gallery is proud to present A Study of Hair, the third installment in what is to be a decade-long project. A Study of… is a series of group exhibitions in which local and international artists are invited to present a contemporary interpretation of a motif drawn from art history.

The 2012 and 2013 exhibitions focused on two of the most important vectors of emotional communication: hands and eyes. This year’s theme, hair, is the most challenging of the series so far, and promises to generate an even more diverse range of interpretations. It is perhaps because hair is one of the most visible signs of our animal nature that it has become one of the primary ways in which we express our desire for artifice.

Hair frames the face, and whether it is used to distinguish or to disguise its function is never neutral. No other part of the body is manipulated in as wide a range of ways or subjected to the same degree of public scrutiny. In the history of art, hair is one of the clearest indications of the evolution of human culture from one decade to the next, and one of the key ways in which artists identify the social identity of their subject.

This year’s artists will include C215, Dave Kinsey, Faith47, Inkie, Jonathan Guthmann, Mark Bode, Merda, Miso, ROA, Stephen Ives, Shohei Otomo, TwoOne, Usugrow, Yusk Imai and Alexander Mitchell.

In its completed form, the A Study Of… project will document over 350 artworks from all corners of the globe. The curator’s intent is to create an historical source with enough breadth to contextualize a generation of artists, many of whom work primarily outside the framework of established institutions. Whilst Mitchell wishes to leave the thematic path of the project open to evolution, he has indicated that the series will include studies of human anatomy, color, and movement.

A STUDY OF HAIR opens on Friday the 26th of September and is on display until Sunday the 5th of October. Admission is free.

Opening: The Hours presents ‘Stockroom’ – a group show

We are proud to announce ‘Stockroom’. A group show featuring some of Australia’s finest young artists

Over the years, The Hours (Beastman, Marty Routledge & Numskull) have produced a number of widely acclaimed art events & exhibitions around Australia and have worked with some of the most recognised young artists in a variety of different genres.

To celebrate these ties, The Hours presents ‘Stockroom’. A large group show featuring a host of artists that have either worked with us before, are working with us now, or are someone we’d like to work with in the future. A mix of connections between the artist and us, as purveyors of modern art, we believe this to be a perfect insight into “if we were to own a stockroom, this is who it would be filled with”.

A Study Of Hands at Backwoods Gallery

“A Study Of” is a decade long project of annual group exhibitions based on subject studies. The goal is to create an archive for future generations, a library of references and also a collection consisting of some of the best artists that I have access to.

It’s an ambitious project, thats growing slowly and I think will result in something unique to give to future generations. We launched the project with A Study Of Hands last year and continued it with A Study Of Eyes this year at Backwoods Gallery. Next years subject is hair which should be cool.

Video & Photos: Neon Golden tour Hong Kong

In September 2013, Australian based creative group The Hours curated an exhibition at Above Second Gallery in Hong Kong’s Central and Western District. Titled ‘Neon Golden’, the exhibition featured new works on paper by a collective of world class contemporary, street and graffiti artists who all share a rich history of friendship and collaboration. A lot of the artists involved also travelled from all corners of the world to be in Hong Kong for the exhibition, and to paint as many walls as possible. This is what went down….

Featuring – Fintan Magee, Shida, Rone, Kyle Hughes-Odgers, Beastman, Yok, Sheryo, Numskull, Vans The Omega, Roach, Phibs, Twoone, Jumbo and Thomas Jackson.

TwoOne Live Paint and Butoh at Backwoods.

Allot of people were flipped out by Fridays Butoh performance, so Sunday we’ll be trying something different at Backwoods.

Hiroyasu will be live painting along side Shiro Murakoshi at the gallery, starting 5pm.

It could be totally fucked up, it could be total magic, or both. We’ll see Sunday.
